IMPROMPTU SPEAKING

In preliminary rounds and all break rounds prior to Finals, students receive two quotations and choose one to speak about. In Final rounds, students are presented with one object as their speech source. The maximum time for Impromptu Speaking is seven minutes in the Senior division and eight minutes in the Junior Division. These times include both prep time and speaking time. In the Senior Division, students may speak all seven minutes if they desire, but must be penalized if they speak for less than four minutes. In the Junior Division, students may speak for all eight minutes if they desire, but must be penalized if they speak for less than three minutes. Speeches should show analysis of the presented quotation or object and connect to it while making sense and using good speech habits as well as clear speechwriting skills like organization and examples.
