EXTEMPORANEOUS SPEAKING
In this event, students have thirty minutes to prepare a speech that answers a question about current events. They may use resources and should cite research in their speeches (5 minutes maximum for Junior, 7 minutes maximum for Senior) plus demonstrate excellent delivery habits.
Questions
The NSDA publishes practice questions monthly

Additionally, The Extemper's Bible provides weekly questions you can use for practice as well as many other resources for Extempers. We encourage you to check them out!
Due to the ever-changing nature of Extemp questions, we don't publish the Regionals/State questions as we assume they'll soon be obsolete. However, here are six classics from the 2025 Blyton tournament your students should be ready to speak about at any time -- they're always topical: BLYTON 2025 QUESTIONS.
This free online coaching course (2 hours) is useful for coaches and students alike as they learn this fantastic event!
This nine-lesson plan guides teachers and students how to learn the art of extemp -- for NSDA member schools only.
